MACSABAL KILN
“MACSABAL WOOD FIRING KILN” at HU Faculty of Fine Arts Ceramics Department
At the initial meeting of International Ceramic Fine Artists Association with headquarters in Zibo-China in 2008, members of faculty of our department and founding members of this association Doğan Özgündoğdu and Mutlu Başkaya met Kim Yong Moon for the first time in Zibo and proposed the name of this master to HU FFA Ceramics Department Board. Upon approval of this name by department board, the bureaucratic formalities in the process of his coming to Turkey started
The project for the kiln introduced to Hacettepe by Korean ceramic and kiln construction craftsman Kim, Yong Moon was started when the invitation sent to him by our dean Prof.Dr. Uğurcan Akyüz and our president Prof.Dr. Uğur Erdener as a foreign instructor to Hacettepe. The owner of this kiln project is the office of the president. Assoc. Prof. Meltem Yılmaz from our faculty is the project executive with Assoc. Prof. Emre Feyzoğlu, Asst. Prof. Hüseyin Özçelik and Lecturer Mutlu Başkaya serving as project assistants.
This Korean type Macsabal Wood Firing Kiln integrated with Kim Yong Moon’s original style has enriched our faculty’s garden which we hope to be transformed into a kiln park in the future. Our president’s office, our faculty, our department, project executives, their assistants and our students have contributed to the best of their ability to completion of this kiln within two months under the leadership of Kim, Yong Moon during the construction of the kiln.
The platform necessary for the kiln was prepared before the materials for the kiln were purchased, a concrete frame was built over it and the earth filled in it was compacted and terraced.
The kiln built on this artificial slope is 12 meters long and 5 meters wide. It has a large firing chamber and three chambers in which the ceramic ware will be placed to be fired.
The temperature in the kiln’s chamber closest to the firebox is about 1300 C, the temperature in the 2nd chamber is 1200 C and the temperature in chamber 3 closest to the chimney is our 1150 C.
